Vintage French Ivorine CHINOISERIE DRAGON Scrimshaw Bangle Bracelet LanternVintage French Ivory CHINOISERIE DRAGON Scrimshaw Bangle Bracelet is a most unusual Celluloid carved bracelet. Imitation Ivory (Ivorine), developed in the mid 1800's came to be used for many products to replace costly genuine Ivory. Also in this time period, the application of "Chinese-esque" themes were popular for European artistic styles. The bracelet combines all the design elements of faux Ivory, Asian Oriental figures of a Chinese Lantern Carrier and fire breathing Dragon, with black died Scrimshaw carving. French Ivory jewelry was very popular during the Art Deco period. Celluloid during this period was also used for jewelry presentation boxes, purse frames, vanity dresser sets, cutlery handles and anything that replaced the use of real Ivory harvested from animals. I believe this bracelet originates from the 1920's - 30's and of French origin. Examples of carved painted Celluloid bangle bracelets can be seen on Pg. 75 of "Plastic Jewelry of the Twentieth Century" by Lillian Baker. Decorated all the way around with 2 Dragons and 2 Chinese Lantern Carriers This is one unique addition for the Celluloid Plastic, Chinoiserie, or Dragon collector. Measurements: Inside Circumference is 8 1/2", 1/2" Wide, 1/4" Deep Condition: Lovely Vintage - the black staining shows some minimal rub wear and the interior shows some yellowing spots, typical of celluloid of the age.
