Description
This listing is for a commemorative plate depicting St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas. From the back of the plate:
St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1884. The first building was located on East 13th Street, northeast of the Capitol grounds.
The present building, a white stone Gothic structure, is located at 14th and Congress Avenue. It was started in 1926 and dedicated on April 28, 1929.
The altar is hand-carved out of light oak and is one of the finest in the South. There are 16 magnificent art windows in the sanctuary depicting the entire Bible story.
In 1954 the Congregation celebrated their 70th Anniversary and the 25th Anniversary of the building.
From the web:
In 1926, the State was expanding its capitol complex and required the church site on 13th Street. The congregation selected a site on 14th Street. The new white stone Gothic structure at 14th and Congress was dedicated on April 28, 1929. The roll of the congregation’s membership listed 432 active members.
In November 1957, the congregation agreed to sell the 14th Street property as the state capitol complex dictated another congregational move. A new site at 15th and Rio Grande was purchased.
This plate depicts the church that was sold in November 1957. I believe the plate to be approximately 70 years old.
The plate measures approximately 10⅛ inches in diameter.
The plate had been displayed but is still in very good condition.
The plastic stand in the photos is not included in the listing.
