    Peter Stuyvesant Statute
    In 1648, the
    New Amsterdam
governor Peter Stuyvesant appointed four men to act as fire wardens. They were empowered to inspect all chimneys and to fine any violators of the rules. Later eight prominent citizens would be appointed to the "Rattle Watch". These volunteers would patrol the streets at night carrying large wooden rattles. If a fire was seen, the men spun the rattles, then directed the responding citizens to form bucket brigades.
Over 200 years later, the Stuyvesant Insurance Company was established in
    New York City
in 1850. The company used the figure/image of Peter Stuyvesant as their logo.
In 1950, Stuyvesant Insurance celebrated their 100 Year Anniversary. As part of their Centinnel activities, a book "
One hundred years, 1850-1950: The Stuyvesant Insurance" Company by Georgia H Cooper (1950) was published. They also issued advertising statutes based on the company logo which bore the image/figure of
Peter Stuyvesent. That statute was cast metal and measured approximately 5.25" high and 3.5" across base.
The listing is for a vintage non metalic figurine/statue of Peter Stuyvesant, measuring approximately 5.75" high and 2.5" wide. The figure is in good condition for its age. It has a small chip in the bottom left corner below the first "S" in Stuyvant. There are some other minor nicks/chips/scratches, all of which adds to the vintage look and feel of this item.
This would make an excellent addition for any collector of fire marks, firefighting or insurance company memorabilia, an agent/broker, or a company employee or retiree.
