SquareTrade © AP6.0Our Oregon Sunstone
is
never
heated or treated.
It is a natural copper bearing feldspar.
We are an American owned company, residing in Thailand.
And have a contract with and receive rough directly
from our Oregon sunstone mine in the Plush Oregon area.
Gemstone photography is difficult and especially difficult for Oregon sunstone because of multicolors and dichroism.
We believe that to better understand the dynamic colors of Oregon sunstone, both photos and video is required.
The photos in general represent the gem color.
While the video defines color variation, dichroism and the precision of our master faceting.
We also include a color text description, when combined with photos and video, provides a very realistic color evaluation.
A certain amount of copper platelets and/or a schiller inclusion pattern in the rough is consider very desireable.
Heavier schillered sunstone rough is desireable but in general will command a lower price.
Very heavy schillered rough
is
best suited for cabochon where the fire is dominated by schiller refraction and reflection.

Why Oregon Sunstone??
The growth of the multicolored and dynamic Oregon sunstone will accelerate in popularity and value; and should be seriously consider for your collection!!
The recent interest in Oregon sunstone was spawned by four GIA articles in late 2013. These articles discussed the geology associated with the formations of the feldspar copper bearing Oregon sunstone. As important was an assessment of faceted Oregon sunstone’s broad range of colors, dichroism and adverturescence. GIA also stated that “fine specimens larger than 5 ct can sell for more than 00.00 per carat”! Oregon sunstone refractive index is 1.54-157 and Mohs (6.5-7.2) hardness which makes it suitable for jewelry.
Many in the gemstone business and collectors believe that Oregon sunstone will be the next tanzanite from a consumer desirability point of view. Prices are rapidly increasing; fueled by intense on air marketing from major internationally televised jewelry networks. They believe that in the next few years, Oregon sunstone will “go viral”!!
Oregon sunstone because of its copper bearing characteristic puts it into the same category as paraiba tourmaline; one of the world’s most desirable and expensive gemstones. However Oregon sunstone is a single origin source (Oregon USA) while paraiba is a multiple origin source (Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique). Most important is that Oregon sunstone rough output is increasing, via new mine sources with proven commercial reserves.
In the 1970’s, Tiffany’s held many Oregon mine claims but decided to divest because they did not unearth commercial quantities of colored rough. After Tiffany divested, miners started to find small amounts of colored rough (pink, red, green, multicolor) beyond Tiffany’s clear and yellow mined rough. Interest increased, resulting in many new mine claims, but then decreased because of diffused andesine being sold as natural Oregon sunstone. Eventually, through the efforts of many prominent labs (GIA, GRS, ISG..), the andesine controversy was resolved. Oregon sunstone was validated as a multicolor natural copper bearing gemstone, setting the stage for rapid growth.
Throughout the 1990’s, and the first decade of this century, Oregon sunstone was a favorite of select collectors and faceters. GIA’s interest resulted from a significant find of large size colored rough in 2010-2011, and a realization that this copper bearing gemstone was geologically interesting and gaining acceptance by consumers and jewelers!
Oregon sunstone is natural and different, than Paraiba, because copper is manifested in a phenomenon called schiller which are small copper platelets and/or copper planes that are eye visible. Schiller features are not classic inclusions because they add additional pleasing visual characteristics, just like silk in Kashmir sapphire and horsetail in demantoid. However, balance is needed because too much schiller can reduce gemstone fire. In general the most expensive faceted Oregon sunstones have minor eye visible schiller and microscopic copper platelets are smoothly integrated into the gemstone crystal. Gems with medium schiller, flash light and color as the gem is rotated. Heavy schiller crystals produce excellent carvings and cabochons.
Oregon Sunstone is on a path to be the “next tanzanite”, and its popularity and value we believe will accelerate. Prices are affordable and your market insight and evaluation is vital as one considers adding this multicolored and visually dynamic copper bearing gem to a collection.
