Description
Naga necklace from the Ao tribe in Nagaland, India, typically worn by wealthy women. Eight of the beads are deep orange-red carnelian colored glass (1 1/4" x 3/4"). I am guessing that they are not true carnelian since there are tiny bubbles within these beads and no striping typical of dyed agate. There are also three thick tubular blue glass beads 5/8" x 1/2". The necklace also contains 12 bright brass bugle, horn or fluted beads which range in heaviness and size (2 3/8" to 1 7/8" in length). The back of the necklace consists of bright royal blue faceted beads and six red white-heart tubular beads. The necklace is 24" long and weighs 8.3 oz. The clasp looks more modern so this necklace may be newer and possibly restrung? You can see an example of this necklace on Page 324 in "the Nagas: Hill People of Northeast India" by Julian Jacobs. This type of necklace is also called a mechongchongsi.
