    More Information
This scenic Sandstone of St. George, Utah pictorially exhibits the wild breathtaking beauty of Utah’s “Canyon Lands” in miniature form. Geologically speaking, it is of the Triassic Period, estimated as being about 150 m.y.o.. The picture effect is brought forth when it is sawed across the wedding or grain with a stone saw, much the same as in fine wood used for inlay purposes. The origin of the highly colored patterns of browns, tans, and buffs may be due to rhythmic precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from aqueous solutions over a long period of time. It is believed that the bands can be attributed to the diffusion of mineral rich solutions through the sandstone, advancing rhythmically to a stage of saturation and subsequent precipitation. Thus we have here, art as old as time, sculpted by Mother Nature.
