LUMBERMEN'S INSURANCE COMPANY
The Lumbermen’s Insurance Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began operations in 1873 when paid fire departments were first beginning to function.
Their original fire mark was of cast iron construction and consisted of an overlapping monogram of the company’s initials, “LICo” embossed upon a 9.0" X 9.0" iron square. The mark was framed with four logs that overlap at the corners.

mark cast by Heritage Metalcraft and measures approximately 10.5" X 10.5". The mark has a black background with red letters. It is a very nice mark with a good painted surface. There are some minor nicks/chips in the paint, which actually add to the vintage look and feel of the mark. This mark is rare and not one of the ones that is regularly seen up for sale.
This would make an excellent addition for any collector of firefighting or insurance memorabilia.
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
