Fire Association
In 1817, five Hose Companies and eleven Engine Fire Companies formed the Fire Association of Philadelphia, becoming the nation's first association of volunteer fire departments. The Fire Association issued their first fire mark that same year.
Their fire mark showed an old fire plug with a length of hose and the initials of the Association on either side. The original marks were of cast iron or lead construction. One of their Fire Marks has been on Independence Hall since the 1800's. The Fire Association later became Reliance Insurance Company, which ceased doing business in 2000, ending a 183 year history.
This is an authentic original FA Fire Mark which is documented in the Addendum to "Footprints of Assurance" (authoritative source for fire marks), as BU 88 VA. The mark measures approximately 7 7/16" X 11 1/2", is of cast iron (3 lb. 5 oz.) construction and was issued from 1861-1867. This mark has a rough rustic (brown house paint) front and heavily rusted back surface, from years of exposure to the elements.
This is a very nice item and it would make an excellent addition for fire mark, fire fighting or insurance memorabilia collectors.
