This listing is for a commemorative plate depicting the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church of (Lund) Elgin, Texas. From the back of the plate:
The Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church of (Lund) Elgin, Texas, was organized January 16, 1897 at Pleasant Hill, later known as Lund. The first church was built in 1900. The parsonage was built in 1902. In 1916 the church was moved to the location of the present church. It was moved again in 1924 when the present sanctuary was built. The old church is used as a parish hall.
Pastors: J. A. Stamline 1896-1906, Eric Swanson 1906-1908, F. V. Isaacson 1909-1912, G. A. Ekman 1913-1916, S. P. Helmberg 1918- 1920, F. V. Isaacson 1921-1926, E. P. Rodeen 1929-1939, A. L. Scott 1940-1944, Herman Anderson 1946-1951, Carl A. A. Larson.
From the web:
First known as Pleasant Hill, this community was settled by Swedish immigrants in the late 1880s. The name of the settlement eventually was changed to Lund in honor of a city in southern Sweden. Under the leadership of the Rev. J.A. Stamline, the Swedish Evangelical Bethlehem Lutheran Church was founded on January 16, 1897. The Lund community included homes, farms, cotton gins, a general store, blacksmith shop, post office, and school. A tornado destroyed the church building on April 7, 1980. A new structure was built and dedicated in 1981.
I believe that the plate depicts the church that was destroyed by the tornado in 1980. The last date noted on the back of the plate was 1951. Based on this, I believe the plate to be over 70 years old.
From another ebayer: "
That is the church that was destroyed by a huge tornado. There was nothing there but the front stairs!"
The plate measures approximately 10â…› inches in diameter.
The plate had been displayed but is still in very good condition. The plate has some crazing due to the age.
The plastic stand in the photos is not included in the listing.
