Antique 14K Gold Carved Sardonyx Shell "Flora" Cameo Pendant - Brooch
Elegant and diminutive, this antique pendant-brooch has a finely carved sardonyx shell cameo of the goddess"Flora," nicely mounted in 14k yellow gold with a protuberant C-clasp / tube hinge pin-back for use as a brooch, and a hinged bail for use as a pendant. The cameo is very well carved with leaves and roses in Flora's flowing hair, spill-curls in the back, a tendril of hair with more leaves and roses trailing across one shoulder, a rose on the opposite shoulder and draped clothing. In excellent condition, the metals test positive for 14k gold, and the pendant-brooch measures 1 x 7/8-inches overall, 1 1/4-inches top-to-bottom with the bail extended, and weighs 3.8 grams.
Flora is the Roman Goddess of flowers and Spring, the Greek equivalent of which is Chloris.
"Sardonyx" shell, also known as Queen's helmet shell (Cassis Madagascariensis), has brown and white layers, and is slower growing and less abundant than other shells used for carving. It's named for Sardonyx, a brown and white banded variety of the mineral chalcedony.
